CRNAs consistently face legislative threats to Scope of Practice. Strong clear voices are needed in Jefferson City.  Who is better equipped to protect and advocate for your profession than you?

 

Below is the agenda for our 2019 MoANA Advocacy Day activities.

 

CRNAs can earn 3 HOURS of FREE Class A CE on Tuesday Afternoon.  Educational Seminar will take place in Jefferson Room C – Capitol Plaza Hotel, 415 W. McCarty St., Jefferson City, MO.  Attend the CE…Stay for the reception!

 

 

January 29^th – Capitol Plaza Hotel, Jefferson City

1:00 – 4:00 – Free CE – Jefferson Room C
4:00 – 6 00 – MoANA Board Meeting
6:30 – 7:30 – CRNA Reception – Jefferson Room A

 

January 30^{th —} Capitol Plaza Hotel, Jefferson City
7:00am – 7:30 am – Kristen Richter, MoANA GR Chair; Mike Nichols, MoANA President to welcome group(plan to arrive no later than 7:00 a.m.)
Meet in the Missouri Room at the Capitol Plaza Hotel, 415 W. McCarty St. Jefferson City.  We will have continental breakfast and organize into groups.

7:30 a.m. – 7:45 a.m. – Shuttles will transport attendees to the First Floor Rotunda State Capitol

8:00 – 8:15 – Meet in the Capitol Rotunda for Briefing from the MoANA lobbyists and legislators.

8:15 – 10:30 – Make legislative visits

10:30 – 11:00 – Shuttles return attendees to the Missouri Room at the Capitol Plaza Hotel for lunch and to prepare thank-you notes to legislators

 

Attire: Business; we recommend wearing shoes that are comfortable for walking.

Please wear a school/work name badge.  Adhesive MoANA name badges will also be available.

 

Please note that hotel rooms sell out quickly at this time of year.  If you are interested in staying in Jefferson City the evening before Advocacy Day, here are two hotel choices that are nearby: 

Capitol Plaza Hotel – Reservations can be made by calling 573-635-1234. A  rate of $104 per night is available by stating you are with the Missouri Association of Nurse Anesthetists.

MEGAN BRENNAN TO RECEIVE MOANA SCHOLARSHIP

Congratulations Megan!!

We are proud to announce that Megan Brennan, a student in Webster University’s CRNA program, has been chosen to receive the 2018 MoANA Student Scholarship.  The scholarship award presentation will take place during the 2018 AANA Annual Congress Student Scholarship Luncheon in Boston, MA on Monday, September 24 from 12:00-1:30 p.m.

HELLO MOANA CRNAS,

I wanted to take a brief moment to thank everyone for their vote of confidence in electing me as your new President.  I have been a CRNA for more than 25 years of which twenty has been as an owner of an all CRNA practice; Excel Anesthesia.  Our company has contracted with more than 24 facilities throughout the Missouri area and provided mainly non-medically directed CRNA services.    It is through managing these CRNA services that I have come to understand the importance of being involved at the state level in the legislative advancement of our CRNA practice; especially in Missouri where we face so many restrictions.  Strangely enough, there have been many occasions in which state surveyors have arrived at one of our facilities and not been fully-educated on the Rules, Regs, and Laws that govern Missouri CRNA scope of practice.  The Surveyors oftentimes want to know where the anesthesiologist is and why we don’t have one.  Over the years, this has been a definite eye-opener and impressed upon me the massive importance of being knowledgeable about our state CRNA scope of practice as well as having an understanding of all the departments involved in Missouri practice regulations.  If I hadn’t been, our facilities could easily have received citations and/or been temporarily shut down. Some centers probably would have sought anesthesia services elsewhere.

I understand that the number of CRNAs in Missouri that actually work in an independent setting are the minority; most work for large hospitals.  I often hear from members, “Why are we focusing on pain, or why are we fighting about orders for controlled substances while providing services in the operating room?  These issues really don’t affect me.  What is the big deal?”  The big deal is that even one CRNA that is unable to provide services to a patient in need due to a political “turf-battle” or a ridiculous restriction is too many!  Not only are the hands of the CRNA tied and the surgeons are placed in a difficult position but more importantly the patient suffers!  It is my opinion, that ANY restriction placed on a CRNA that limits their ability to provide anesthesia services must be challenged and fought.  Any issue not fought, is an issue lost and is a step backward.  Missouri can’t afford any more steps backward.  Missouri is listed close to the bottom of the list–37^th for its ability to provide its citizens access to healthcare.  We are not in the business of making this worse….we are here to make it better.  We do this by educating ourselves first, and then the various stakeholders, the public, and our patients.  We must have a seat at the table, otherwise we will find ourselves on the menu.   With your help-that is exactly what I plan to do!  I plan on sitting at the table.
