What is moana?
Established in the late 1800s as the first clinical nursing specialty, nurse anesthesia developed in response to the need for dedicated and watchful care of the anesthetized surgical patient. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) have been administering anesthesia for over 150 years. Missouri CRNAs are among the largest and oldest organized groups of CRNAs in America.
WHAT ARE CRNAs?
48% of Missouri counties offering surgical services depend on anesthesia provided solely by CRNAs. The anesthesia services provided by CRNAs are essential in rural and medically underserved areas of our state. Retaining practice rights for CRNAs reduces the burden for rural patients to travel great distances to urban areas, or in some cases forgo needed care. As advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), CRNAs practice with a high degree of autonomy and professional responsibility. Each and every anesthetic is delivered with the same watchful care we have provided for more than 150 years. CRNAs safely deliver 49 million anesthetics each year in the United States.
OUR PATIENTS
Our patients are our biggest priority. Patients preparing to undergo anesthesia should be informed of their options for anesthesia, the training and background of their anesthesia provider, and what to expect before and after the perioperative period. MoANA strives to provide thorough resources to help our patients feel safe and secure as they prepare for medical procedures.
HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATORS
CRNAs practice in every setting in which anesthesia is delivered: Trauma centers, hospital surgical suites, obstetrical delivery rooms, critical access hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, as well as the offices of dentists, podiatrists, ophthalmologists, plastic surgeons, and pain management specialists. The U.S. military, Public Health Services, and Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare facilities all depend heavily on the quality training and care delivery provided by CRNAs, who practice independently in many of these settings.
our patients
One of our organization’s biggest priorities is providing anesthesia patients with valuable information on the different types of anesthesia, CRNAs and general anesthesia care. MoANA strives to provide thorough resources to help our patients feel safe and secure before medical procedures.
Our history
The Missouri Association of Nurse Anesthetists (MoANA) includes more than 1,200 members. MoANA was founded in 1935 by 15 charter members, including Helen Lamb of St. Louis. Lamb became the first president of MoANA and later served as president of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA), our parent organization, which was established in 1931. Helen Lamb was the first director of the School of Anesthesia at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. Established in 1929, this training program is one of the first in the nation.
